The Mountain Bike (a.k.a ATB-All Terrain Bike) was developed in the early 1970's by a few pioneer bike builders such as; Gary Fisher, Richard Cunningham, and Joe Breeze. The true origins have long been debated as to who really was responsible. Suffice to say that mountain biking took off in a big way and is now the most popular type of bike. Unlike it's 10 -speed, lightweight, drop handlebar road racing cousin, mountain bikes represented a newly founded freedom for excitement, going off road, climbing mountain trails, that literally created a new category and continues to rule the bike industry to this day. Possessing stronger frames, multiple gearing (up to 27) with front shocks and rear shocks, these bikes are the SUV's of the bike world.
